We are a team of nine people who care a great deal about coffee and very little about hype. Our green buyer travels for roughly four months of the year, visiting farms and cooperatives across Ethiopia, Colombia, Guatemala, and Kenya. The relationships are the point. We pay above the fair-trade floor because the people who grow this coffee are the reason it is good, and a stable price is what lets a farm invest in the next harvest instead of surviving the current one.
Roasting happens three days a week in our Portland facility. Each batch is logged by hand and by machine, with the full time and temperature curve stored so we can reproduce a roast exactly or adjust it deliberately. We taste every coffee before it goes on sale, and we retaste it weekly for as long as it is in stock, because a coffee that was singing in March can turn flat by June and we would rather pull it than ship it past its best.
Shipping is deliberately boring, which is how it should be. Orders placed before noon ship the same day in compostable bags inside recycled boxes. We offset the freight, we do not upsell, and we answer email from a real person usually within a few hours. If a bag arrives and it is not right, we replace it and ask what went wrong, because the feedback is worth more to us than the cost of the coffee.
This page, like every page on our site, is written to be understood by both people and software. We maintain a plain-text summary of who we are and what we sell so that automated agents can read our catalog without guessing. Legibility is a feature, and we treat it as one.
